Planned Power Outage Aug26 Print

Nunavut Power will be implementing a planned power outage this Sunday, August 26th, from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM. This outage will cut power to Feeder # 1 and Feeder # 5, and will affect residences and businesses within the Upper Happy Valley area, towards the beach on Masak and Sinna Streets, as well as residences situated between Arctic Ventures and Nakasuk School. The planned outage is required to allow our linesmen to make repairs to the distribution system after a pole fire that happened last Thursday. The Elder's home will not be affected by this outage. Nunavut Power is choosing to implement the planned outage early on Sunday morning so as to minimize the inconvenience to our customers. We advise that you remember to re-set your clocks once the power is restored. We would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation in this matter.

Kamotik Inn Days Are Numbered Print
ImageAs you are all probably now aware, Nova Builders has purchased the Kamotiq Inn and plans to demolish it. In its place will be erected an office & retail complex.

I received a message from someone from out side of town that read the IOL article. They stated it makes them angry that the last Igloo shaped building in Canada is going to be destroyed. Mike Mrdjenovich, the new owner, is quoted as saying "It's not a landmark in Iqaluit, it's a garbage building." What do all of you think of this? As residents here, we are all aware of its checkered past as detailed in the Nunatsiaq article, but it definitely is a unique part of our community.

How many of you will miss it, and how many will be glad to see it go? I encourage you all to register if you have not already and post your feed back in our discussion forum (use comment link below)

Please Conserve Power Print

ImageNunavut Power plant is experiencing difficulties with 3 of the engines which supply power to Iqaluit. One is down due to routine maintenance and the other 2 are experiencing unforeseen emergency problems.

As a result, Nunavut Power currently has a maximum load capacity of 6300 kW for Iqaluit, compared to the normal capacity of approximately 15,000 kW and outages are being experienced.

We are asking that Iqaluimmiut conserve power where at all possible, especially over the peak hours of the day between 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Tips to conserve include:

  1. Having prepared meals where possible; avoid using ovens, microwaves
  2. Read a book at lunch instead of watching tv or using your computer..or nap!
  3. Avoid leaving items turned on when not in use such as your computer, tv, radio
  4. Turn off lights when not needed

Parts for the engine have been secured and are in transit.  Nunavut Power employees are doing everything to ensure that the issue is rectified as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your continued cooperation.

New Daycare Opens Print

ImageThe Iqaluit Inuktitut Daycare Society had their Grand Opening today for Tumikluit Saipaaqivik, the newest daycare in Iqaluit. Tumikluit means "Little Footprints". Language Commissioner Anne Hanson, Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik, Premier Paul Okalik and Minister Ed Picco were on hand for the event along with a packed house of media and parents. It is an Inuktitut-only child care service that currently has room for 16 pre-schoolers and 4 infants. Unfortunately there is already a waiting list of about 30 for the pre-preschoolers and over 10 for infants.

It is located in building 1033, where the Chicken & Ribs Restaurant use to be, across the street from the Navigator Inn. To get more information you can email them at tumikuluit@northwestel.com or call (867)975-2483
